National Institute of Cooperative Education (NICE) Conference

Lynches River Electric Cooperative is offering one high school student the opportunity to attend the National Institute of Cooperative Education (NICE) Conference in Asheville, N.C.

The dates for 2008 are July 27 - 30.

The South Carolina Cooperative Council and the Cooperative Council of North Carolina are jointly hosting the conference at the University of North Carolina-Asheville campus.

At the conference, students become familiar with the American competitive business system with special emphasis on cooperatives. Objectives of the program are to: increase the understanding of basic cooperative principles and how cooperatives are structured and operated, provide opportunities for leadership development and have fun through recreation, motivation and fellowship.

General Sessions and small groups offer attendees opportunities to participate in activities focusing on learning about cooperatives as well as leadership development. Get acquainted activities, a talent show, a dance, an afternoon outing in Asheville and an evening to enjoy a menu of local fare and mountain music provides a chance to interact with other youth and adult leaders.

Young people of varying backgrounds and interests from across the country attend the conference.

Lynches River Electric Cooperative sponsors one high school student each year. The Cooperative Council provides transportation. Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

· Student's home or family business must receive power from Lynches River

· Be 16 to 19 years of age

· Willing to participate in the entire conference
