NOAA Weather Radio

If you live in an area that's prone to severe weather, consider purchasing a multi-band/function receiver or a standalone receiver so you can receive weather service reports from the National Weather Service.

The NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting weather information directly from nearby National Weather Service offices. NWR broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day.

NWR transmitters broadcast on one of seven VHF frequencies from 162.400 MHz to 162.550 MHz. The broadcasts cannot be heard on a simple AM/FM radio receiver. Receiver options range from handheld portable units, which just pick up Weather Radio, to desktop and console models that receive Weather Radio in addition to other broadcasts.

The receiver you choose depends on the information you want to access, and how and where you plan to access Weather Service broadcasts. The stand-alone Weather Radio receiver alerts you to warnings and watches day or night. A multi-band/function receiver with the Weather Band included allows you to tune in to the weather broadcast without receiving alerts.

You can find receivers at electronics, department, sporting goods and boating and marine accessory stores and in store catalogs. They can also be purchased online directly from manufacturers.
