WIRE
Women Involved in Rural Electrification (WIRE) is a statewide community service organization established in 1981 through The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc. WIRE was created as a non-profit organization to foster interest in and understanding of the rural electric program and to improve the quality of life in rural areas. The Lynches River chapter of WIRE was organized in 1994. Their motto "People Helping People" aptly describes the volunteer work of the women in WIRE. Members are involved citizens aiding victims of tornadoes, hurricanes and house fires, supporting homeless shelters, children's homes, and programs sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and the Palmetto Project. You'll find WIRE members involved in the Operation Caring project visiting children's hospitals and nursing homes near the holidays. The Jenny Ballard Opportunity Scholarship (Application) (PDF) The Jenny Ballard Opportunity Scholarship is sponsored by Women Involved in Rural Electrification and is awarded to a woman who may not have been able to atend college when she graduated from high school, but now wants to further her education. The $2,500 scholarship will be presented to two electric cooperative members based on financial need and personal goals . Applicants must be a member/consumer of a South Carolina electric cooperative.
